One of the types of foster care we offer is short term foster care. This is when the child is placed with you on a temporary basis. It is a very common type of foster care. The child would be with you on a temporary basis until they are returned to their birth parents, moved to a long term foster carer or are adopted. Short term fostering can be for just a few days, or weeks or even several months.
Long term foster care is longer than short term foster care. The child is placed with you for two years or longer and often until they reach adulthood. They would become part of your family.
Short break foster care is when a child is placed with you so that their birth parents or long term foster carers can have a break from caring for the child. This may be because the child has a disability or special needs. The child would be with you for a night, a weekend or even a week or two and you may care for the same child more than once.
