W.I.S.E. UP! Workshop for 10 to 12 year olds @ Scottish Adoption
Aug 23 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
W.I.S.E. UP! Workshop for 10 to 12 year olds @ Scottish Adoption

Families of adopted children and the children themselves are not strangers to intrusive questions about private information, such as “Is that your real child (or mother)?” and “Why did your mother give you away?” While the questions may be benign, they can be uncomfortable to handle and harmful to a child’s self-esteem. To counteract this, The Center for Adoption Support and Education (C.A.S.E.) in Maryland has developed an empowering tool for adoptive children and their families. The “W.I.S.E. Up!” tool is based on the premise that adoptive children are wiser about adoption than peers who are not adopted. The tool uses the acronym W.I.S.E. to teach children four options for responding to uncomfortable questions: W (walk away), I (ignore or change the subject), S (share what you are comfortable sharing), and E (educate about adoption in general). Staff can assist adoptive families by introducing them to this empowering tool.

SafeBase Training @ St Andrew's Children's Society
Oct 30 @ 10:00 am – Nov 13 @ 4:00 pm
SafeBase Training @ St Andrew's Children's Society

SafeBase has been created to meet the demands from parents for help in dealing with challenging behaviours from their adoptive children.

Parents who have attended the SafeBase programme in the past have commented:

“I found the course very useful in reinforcing information about attachment.  However, the most valuable part of the course was access to professionals’ advice which I have followed at home with great success.”

It has helped me to reflect upon the reasons behind behaviour and gain a better understanding of the impact I may have on those behaviours.”

The dates for this training are 30th and 31st October and 6th and 13th November 2019.

All refreshments and lunches are provided.

The cost per family is £1,000 and this is usually funded by the family’s placing authority.

Please call 0131 454 3370 and ask to speak to the Duty Worker or email info@standrews-children.org.uk to find out more or make a booking.
